What Makes an Investment "Halal"?

The word halal (حلال) means "permissible" in Arabic. When applied to investing, it means your money is only going into businesses and activities that align with Islamic ethical principles.

A halal investment passes two types of screening:

Business Activity Screen

What does the company do? Companies primarily involved in prohibited industries are excluded entirely.

Financial Ratio Screen

How does the company manage its money? Even permissible businesses are checked for excessive debt or interest income.
